Schedule & Matchup

Not all matchups are equal. The same player against two different defenses can have a 10-point swing in expected output. Understanding this is what separates the manager who got lucky on a streamer from the one who plans it.

The simplest tool is yards allowed per position — how many fantasy points each defense gives up to QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs. Most fantasy sites publish this weekly. Pair it with DVOA for a more sophisticated read that adjusts for opponent quality.

The biggest applications:

Streaming QB — instead of drafting a top-10 quarterbackThrows and hands off the ball; the offense's leader and primary decision-maker., you take two cheap QBs and play whichever has the better matchup that week. A mid-tier QB facing a bottom-5 pass defense often outscores an elite QB facing a top-5 unit, for free.

Streaming DST — defense-special teams scoring is mostly matchup-driven. Picking up the defense facing the worst offense each week reliably produces top-10 DST scores.

Avoiding shadow corners — elite cornerbacks who follow the opponent's WR1 across the formation can erase a receiver. Check before starting your WR1 against one.

Schedule strength compounds over a season. A receiver with three brutal matchups in your fantasy playoff weeks (Weeks 15-17) is worth less than his rest-of-season ranking suggests.
