Quarterback offense position
Throws and hands off the ball; the offense's leader and primary decision-maker.
"The quarterback called an audible at the line."
Running Back offense position
Lines up behind the QB; runs the ball, catches short passes, and pass-blocks.
Wide Receiver offense position
Lines up wide; primary deep target for catching passes.
Tight End offense position
Hybrid lineman/receiver who blocks and catches passes from near the line.
Offensive Line offense position
Five linemen (LT, LG, C, RG, RT) who block defenders and protect the QB.
Center offense position
Snaps the ball to the QB and calls line protection schemes.
Fullback offense position
Lead blocker for the running back; rare in modern offenses.
Defensive Line defense position
Defensive ends and tackles who attack the line of scrimmage.
Linebacker defense position
Second-level defender; tackles runs, blitzes, and covers tight ends and running backs.
Edge Rusher defense position
Modern catch-all for defensive end / outside linebacker whose job is sacking the QB.
Cornerback defense position
Defensive back who covers wide receivers in man or zone coverage.
Safety defense position
Deep defender. Free safety plays centerfield; strong safety supports the run.
Nickel Back defense position
Extra defensive back added in passing situations (5 DBs total = nickel package).
Kicker special teams
Specialist who attempts field goals and extra points.
Punter special teams
Kicks the ball away on 4th down to flip field position.
Long Snapper special teams
Specialist who snaps for field goals and punts.
Returner special teams
Player who fields kickoffs and punts and runs them back.
Snap play
The play's start; the ball is passed from center to QB.
Shotgun formation
Formation where the QB lines up several yards behind the center to receive the snap.
Play Action play
QB fakes a handoff, then drops back to pass — designed to draw the linebackers up.
RPO play
Run-Pass Option. The QB reads a defender post-snap and chooses between a run and a pass.
Screen Pass play
Short pass behind the line of scrimmage with blockers leading downfield.
Blitz play
Defense sends extra rushers (linebackers or DBs) at the QB to disrupt the play.
Hail Mary play
A long, last-ditch pass thrown into the end zone, usually as time expires.
"Down by 4 with 2 seconds left, he threw a Hail Mary."
Holding penalty
Grabbing or restraining a non-ball-carrier. 10 yards on offense, 5 + auto first down on defense.
Pass Interference penalty
Illegal contact with a receiver during a pass. Defensive PI is a spot foul; offensive PI is 10 yards.
False Start penalty
Pre-snap movement by an offensive player. 5-yard penalty.
Offside penalty
Defender lined up in the neutral zone at the snap. 5-yard penalty.
Roughing the Passer penalty
Late or excessive hit on the QB. 15 yards plus an automatic first down.
Delay of Game penalty
Failure to snap the ball before the play clock hits zero. 5-yard penalty.
Intentional Grounding penalty
QB throws an incomplete pass with no eligible receiver in the area to avoid a sack. 10 yards and loss of down.
Horse-Collar Tackle penalty
Tackling a runner by grabbing the back of the shoulder pads or jersey. 15-yard penalty.
Touchdown play
Six points scored by carrying or catching the ball into the opponent's end zone, or by recovering a fumble there.
Field Goal play
Three points scored by kicking the ball through the uprights.
Sack stat
Tackling the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage before he throws. Counts as negative yardage on the offense's stat sheet and a positive sack on the defender's.
Interception stat
A defender catches a forward pass intended for an offensive player, taking possession for the defense.
Fumble situation
A ball-carrier loses possession before being downed. Either team can recover; whoever does so gains possession.
Pick Six play
An interception returned for a touchdown — six points off a turnover, plus the demoralizing factor.
First Down situation
The first of four downs in a series. Gaining 10 yards in the series resets to a fresh first down.
Line of Scrimmage situation
The imaginary line where the ball is spotted at the start of a play. Players must be set on their side at the snap.
Pocket situation
The protected zone behind the offensive line where the QB drops back to pass. "Stepping up in the pocket" means moving forward into space the linemen are creating.
Touchback situation
A kick that ends in the receiving team's end zone with no return. Under the 2025 dynamic-kickoff rules, touchbacks place the ball at the 35-yard line.
Passer Rating stat
Composite QB efficiency stat (0-158.3) combining completion %, yards per attempt, TDs, and INTs.
YAC stat
Yards After Catch — yardage gained by a receiver after the reception.
Target Share stat
Percentage of a team's pass attempts directed at a given receiver. Critical fantasy indicator.
Snap Share stat
Percentage of offensive plays a player is on the field for. Predicts opportunity.
Down and Distance situation
Current down (1-4) and yards to go for a fresh set of downs. "3rd and 7" = 3rd down, 7 yards needed.
Red Zone situation
Offensive territory inside the opponent's 20-yard line — where TDs become realistic.
Two-Minute Warning situation
Automatic clock stoppage with 2:00 remaining in each half.
Fair Catch situation
Returner waves an arm to signal no return; cannot be hit. Used to avoid traffic.
PPR fantasy
Points Per Reception fantasy scoring. 1 point per catch (PPR), 0.5 (Half-PPR), or 0 (Standard).
Snake Draft fantasy
Fantasy draft format where pick order reverses each round (1-12, then 12-1, then 1-12...).
Waiver Wire fantasy
In-season free agency. Players are claimed in priority order or via FAAB bids.
FAAB fantasy
Free Agent Acquisition Budget — fantasy bidding system for waiver claims.
Handcuff fantasy
Drafting a starting RB's primary backup as injury insurance.
DVOA stat
Defense-adjusted Value Over Average. An efficiency metric that grades plays against league average, adjusted for opponent quality. Originated at Football Outsiders; now hosted at FTN Fantasy under Aaron Schatz.
Streaming fantasy
Rotating between waiver-wire QBs, TEs, or DSTs each week based on matchup, instead of drafting one and starting them all season.
Boom/Bust fantasy
A high-variance player whose weekly output swings between huge and minimal — high ceiling, low floor. Often deep-threat receivers or touchdown-dependent backs.
Goal-Line Touches stat
Carries by a running back inside the opponent's 5-yard line. The strongest leading indicator of rushing-touchdown opportunity.
Game Script fantasy
How a game's score progression dictates play-calling. Teams with leads run; teams trailing pass. Vegas spreads predict it before kickoff.
aDOT stat
Average Depth of Target. The mean distance downfield a receiver is targeted. High aDOT receivers are boom/bust; low aDOT slot receivers offer steadier PPR floor.
Workhorse fantasy
A running back who handles the vast majority of his team's carries and receives passing-down work — typically 65%+ of touches and 70%+ of snaps.
Shadow Coverage defense position
A cornerback who follows the opponent's WR1 across the formation, instead of staying on one side. Elite shadow corners can erase a receiver from the game plan.
